Nike Lake

Natural feature · Enugu State

Overview

Nike Lake lies on the eastern edge of Enugu, in Enugu State, in the South East zone. It is a lake in the Nike area of the city, best known as the setting for a lakeside hotel and as an open stretch of water within reach of the built-up area.

History

Nike is one of the older Igbo communities in the Enugu area, established well before the colonial coal town that grew nearby from 1909 onwards. As Enugu expanded from a mining settlement into a regional capital, the lake at its edge was developed for recreation, and a hotel and resort were built beside it in the later twentieth century. The lake's surroundings have since been affected by the city's growth, and management of the resort has changed hands over time.

What to expect

The lake is a broad, quiet stretch of water with gently sloping banks and a view across to the far shore, with the hotel grounds along one side. The attraction is the water and the open setting rather than any built feature. Because the resort's condition and operation have varied, current visitor information should be checked directly rather than assumed.

Connected history or culture

The lake sits beside the coal city described in coal, in Igbo country, and close to Awhum Waterfall and Cave north of the city.
