Coal

Overview

Coal gave Enugu its nickname, the Coal City, and gave colonial Nigeria its first large industrial workforce. The seams of the Enugu escarpment fuelled the railways and power stations of the early and mid-twentieth century before oil and diesel displaced them.

Where it's found

The main worked deposits lie in the Enugu escarpment in Enugu State, in the south-east, on land of the Igbo communities of the area, with further coal-bearing formations recorded in parts of Benue, Kogi and Gombe states.

History of exploitation

Coal was identified in the Enugu area around 1909 during colonial geological survey work, and mining began at Ogbete a few years later, in the mid-1910s. The mines supplied the railway and later the electricity supply, and the town of Enugu grew around them. The Iva Valley shootings of 1949, in which police killed striking miners, became a landmark event in the labour politics of the nationalist movement. Mining declined from the 1960s with the shift to diesel locomotives and the disruption of the civil war, and the industry never recovered its earlier scale.

Economic role

Coal was the fuel of Nigeria's first industrial infrastructure and the reason Enugu exists as a city. Its role in the national energy mix today is small, and no current output figures are given here.

Environmental and social impact

Underground and opencast working left subsidence, spoil heaps and acidic mine drainage in parts of the Enugu escarpment, and abandoned adits remain a local hazard. The mining town also produced one of the country's earliest organised labour movements, and the 1949 killings remain part of how that history is remembered.

Connected history and people

The Iva Valley shootings of 1949 tie this resource directly to the nationalist movement and the path to independence, when the deaths of striking coal miners hardened political opposition across the country.
