Jay-Jay Okocha is a former midfielder who captained the Nigerian national team and played in Germany, Turkey, France and England. He is Igbo, born in Enugu State, with family roots at Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State.

Biography

Okocha began his professional career in Germany with Borussia Neunkirchen and then Eintracht Frankfurt, where a goal against Karlsruhe in 1993 became one of the most replayed in Bundesliga highlight reels. He moved to Fenerbahçe, then to Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that was at the time a record for an African player, and later to Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League, where he captained the side and reached a League Cup final.

With Nigeria he won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994, took the gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 as part of the team that beat Argentina in the final, and played at the World Cups of 1994, 1998 and 2002, captaining the team in his later years. He was named in the Africa Cup of Nations team of the tournament more than once and finished among the leading candidates for African Footballer of the Year. He retired from international football after 2006 and later held roles in football administration and broadcasting.
