Etsako

Also known as Afenmai, Yekhee

Overview

The Etsako are an Edoid-speaking people of northern Edo State, often included within the wider Afenmai cultural area. They are found in communities such as Auchi, Agenebode, Fugar, Ibie and Uzairue.

Origins and history

Etsako history is connected to Edoid-speaking settlement north of Benin and to long interaction with Nupe, Ebira, Afemai and Benin cultural influences. Auchi and other Etsako towns became important centres of trade, Islamic learning and local administration.

Social structure

Etsako communities are organised through clans, towns, age grades, titled chiefs and recognised traditional rulers. Family compounds and town unions remain important in social organisation.

Traditional religion

Traditional Etsako religion included ancestral veneration and local deities connected to land, fertility and protection. Islam is strong in Auchi and some Etsako communities, Christianity is also widespread, and customary practices remain visible.

Notable customs

Etsako culture includes age-grade systems, traditional music, weaving, marriage rites and festivals tied to town identity. Auchi's role as a centre of Islamic scholarship is especially significant.
