Ikogosi Warm Springs

Natural feature · Ekiti State

Overview

Ikogosi, in Ekiti State, in the South West zone, is known for a warm spring and a cold spring that rise close together and meet in a single channel. The meeting point, where the two flows run together, is the feature the site is known for.

History

The springs rise in wooded hill country in Yoruba Ekiti, and local tradition explains the two flows through a story of two rivals. Mission activity in the area from the middle of the twentieth century brought the springs wider notice, and a conference and holiday centre was later built beside them. The warm water's temperature is generally explained by the depth of its underground path rather than by volcanic activity, since there is no volcanic source in this part of Nigeria.

What to expect

Short paths lead through gardens and woodland to the two sources and to the confluence, where the difference in temperature can be felt between the flows. The setting is a wooded valley on hilly ground. Facilities and management of the resort beside the springs have changed several times, so current visitor information should be checked before travelling.

Connected history or culture

The springs lie in Ekiti Yoruba country, in the same highland belt as Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, and the surrounding farming economy is part of the cocoa belt.
