Overview
The Tarok are a Plateau people found mainly around Langtang North, Langtang South, Wase, Mikang and neighbouring areas of Plateau State. The older external name Yergam appears in some historical sources, but Tarok is the preferred name.
Origins and history
Tarok history combines traditions of settlement, migration and federation among communities in southern Plateau. The Tarok developed strong military and farming traditions and later became prominent in education, public service and the Nigerian armed forces.
Social structure
Tarok society is organised through clans, villages, elders, age grades, title holders and recognised traditional authority. Extended-family compounds and community associations remain influential.
Traditional religion
Traditional Tarok religion includes ancestral veneration, land-linked rites and ritual practices connected with farming and community protection. Christianity is now widespread, while customary institutions continue to shape cultural life.
Notable customs
Tarok culture is known for the Ilum O'Tarok festival, traditional music, dance, age-grade activity, farming celebrations and marriage ceremonies. Language and clan identity are important markers of belonging.
